Adolescent Chemical Dependency Intensive Outpatient Program (CD-IOP)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Adolescent CD-IOP assists patients in beginning a life of recovery while they remain in the community. Many adolescents who begin the program are either in a pre-contemplative or in a contemplative stage of change concerning their substance usage. They may not believe their substance usage is a problem and/or they are ambivalent about no longer using substances. The goal of our program is to help adolescents determine their usage is problematic, to assist them in developing skills to remain clean and sober, and to expose them to clean and sober fun. They gain knowledge about addiction and recovery from a physical, psychological and habitual perspective and are assisted in developing a recovery lifestyle and support system.

The Adolescent IOP uses a family systems model and strongly encourages weekly parental/guardian participation. Parental/guardian involvement is an important factor in reaching a successful outcome for adolescents abusing substances.

Topics covered in this group-based program include:

  • Cravings

  • Physical Effects

  • Coping with Anger

  • Refusal Skills

  • Distorted Thinking

  • Disease Concept

  • Boundaries

  • Healthy Relationships

  • Stress Management

  • Recovery Support System Development

While all treatment is in a group setting, individual treatment plans are developed with the Group Facilitator. Group Facilitators are professionals who are experienced in both chemical dependency and mental health issues.

Goals of treatment include:

  • Interrupting the drug/alcohol use cycle

  • Identifying and changing negative behavioral patterns

  • Establishing healthy communication patterns with parents

  • Developing positive coping skills

  • Establishing positive, fun activities

  • Identifying and encouraging lifestyle changes necessary to support continued recovery

  • Identifying signals or relapse triggers

The IOP meets at Centennial Peaks Hospital three times per week, for three hours each session, for a total of eight weeks (24 sessions). The program meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6pm – 9pm. Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to attend Wednesday evening groups (Family Night). Aftercare is provided for one year after members complete the IOP.

PROGRAM PHILOSPHY
We believe that addiction is a brain disease which can be treated and recognize that many of those struggling with an addiction also have a co-occurring disorder (an addiction in addition to a mental health issue such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder). Our program is based on the understanding that adolescent use of mood-altering substances manifests itself in physical, psychological, social and educational functioning which not only affect the person using the chemical, but also family, friends and others in their social circle. Our goal is to assist adolescents to identify how their substance use is affecting them with their functioning and help them develop positive coping skills to enjoy life. The IOP also helps parents cope with having a child who is addicted to substances and assists them in creating structure and healthy boundaries in their lives.
